Great Mongolian State

1. Temujin united the Mongol aimags.
Childhood of Temujin. Temujin was born in 1162 in Deluun Boldog near to the Onon River (Deluun Hill) in the territory of Khentii aimag as the son of Queen Oelun of Esukhei Baatar.
When Temujin was 9 years old, Esukhei Baatar was poisoned by Tatars on his way back to home after betrothing Temujin with Burte, a daughter of Dai-Setsen of Hongirad aimag. Oelun left with his half-orphan children and tribes and aimags followed Taichuud aimag with their own will. Left with only eight yellow and a tailless brown horses, Oelun fed his children with berries and roots. When children matured, they fed their mother with fish, marmots and prairie squirrels in return. Regardless their decency, Oelun brought up her children with the discipline of nobility.

The factors that affected Temujin’s vision and will were:

First, his noble background kindles his desire to gain the power and unite his scattered aimags and tribes. That is why; Temujin took Burte’s black fur coat, presented as a gift for the bride from Oelun, the mother in law, and presented to Van Khaan Tooril of Khereid aimag, a friend of his father, in order to ask the support for uniting his scattered state.

Two, Childhood and teenage years of Temujin made him a man of enduring and patience. For example in the “Secret History of Mongolia” it clearly described that “when Taichuud aimag raided by claiming that the lamb’s wool renewed and body strengthened, all were imprisoned without food for nine days, and enduring the difficulties such as lying in water in pillory and inside a cart with full of wool in sunny hot day and galloping three days and nights when he returned his eight yellow horses”.

About this time: when he was uniting aimags and tribes he was drinking the foam of the saliva and eating the toothpick meat.

Third, the revenge that was existed between Mongol aimags was the stimulus to him uniting his Mongol aimags and tribes using all his sources and energy. For example, Ambagai Khaan said that I was captured by Tatars. Try to take my revenge from Tatars until your nails and fingers break. Also Oelun Mother taught her children that “Why are you arguing with each other, when you are the children of one father. You already know that now, you have no friends except your shadow and no whip except your horse’s tail. How can we take the revenge from Taichuud, if we stay like this?”

Temujin refreshed his strength and he started to unite all Mongol tribes and aimags one after another, with assistance of his friends. Annexed Mongol tribes and aimags are as follows:

1. Conquest over Merged. In 1185, he raided and captured people and animals of Three Merged with a help of Van Khaan Tooril and Jamukha.

But, there was a disagreement between Temujin and Jamukha. They lived together for year and a half after the conquest of Merged. They both wanted the throne of Khamag Mongol (All Mongols), which was empty since Khotula Khaan, among the nobles of the Khamag Mongols. Temujin paid an enormous attention in attracting people and serfs of Jamukha while they were together. That is why, over 20 big and small tribes followed Temujin in the night after Jamukha moved away from Temujin.

While camping near Khukh nuur of Khar Zurkhen, Tsenkher River, in 1189, Temujin was raised to the throne as the Khaan of Khamag Mongols by Altan, a son of Khotula Khaan and Sacha-Bekhi, the chieftain of Zurkhen aimag.

Altan and Khuchar explained their reason of raising Temujin as the Khaan to deal with the actions such as:

"To lead the battles, capture good girls and grab the best ghers
To raid the other people, own beautiful mistresses and take the best horses
To hunt roebucks and elks"

But on the other hand, they promised to follow the Khaan’s words, by risking their wealth and life and it helped Temujin to succeed in the future. They promises were as follows:

“If I fail to follow the strict decree
Ordered by Khaan Temujin’s degree
Desert my guilty body
Take my property
And own my lady”

Hence, Temujin named as Chinggis Khaan. Chinggis Khaan means Ocean and Sea in old Mongolia. After becoming Khaan of Khamag Mongols, Temujin restored and newly established some rules and in order to strengthen his position, he was surrounded by his courtiers and generals.

He established:
 Archers
 Cooks and chefs
 Cart man
Cherbi /a man in charge of the serfs and accompanying women in the court/
 Sheepherders and horsemen
 Guides-investigating distant and surrounding areas.
 Chief of the Court affair.
